Wildebeest Migration safaris are specially created to enjoy the greatest natural wild spectacle from the most vantage locations. the best time for a migration safari is July to October. River crossings at the Mara River and enventual spread into the Mara Triangle and the Greater Mara takes time progressively during those months.
A migration safari is regarded as one of the best wildlife safari type because the predators are busy now that the 1 million + herbivores are back from Serengeti. Lions do not have to group into friendly companies to hunt the difficult buffalo. The hyenas too can laugh again. Life is interesting both for the hunter and the hunted, and more so. for us who watch.
Some of the sampled Masai Mara migration safaris include:-
A short safari. Flying option or road safari option. In early to Mid July those who prefer 'open' camping can choose to stay on either of the 7 private campsites by the banks of the Mara River. However, booking for these are done pretty earlier. Surprisingly, some bookings for these are done even as many as 7 months prior. The campsites are scenic and very close to the action up to the end of July.
Day 1: Fly-in to the Mara (45 mins) or drive by road for approximately 5-6 hours to the Great Masai Mara. Arrive in time for lunch at your preferred lodge or tented camp. A flying safari to Masai Mara will obviously provide more time to attend a Masai Cultural Centre and mix with them and learn more about their way of life and engage other relaxation activities before those on road arrive. However, a scheduled late afternoon game drive takes place and usually the leading attraction of the season is the concentration of herbivores mainly the Wildebeest and the zebras and the hunting dramas of different lion prides, and other hungry canines.
Dinner and overnight at your lodge or tented camp
Day 2: Full day spent exploring the Mara. All meals at lodge. As your last night in the Masai Mara on this trip, you may choose to schedule a romantic bush dinner, a memorable sundowner under the Acacia trees of Africa, or any interesting activities with the Maasai people, a massage or other relaxation activities since most hotels and lodges have healty and beauty facillities.
Dinner and overnight at your lodge or tented camp
Day 3: Pre-breakfast game drive or choose a balloon ride and take your champagne breakfast in the middle of nowhere and drive back watching game to your hotel or lodge. Prepare and leave for your flight back to Nairobi or undertake your road drive arriving in time for lunch at the reknown Carnivore Restaurant.
